SIOUX CITY’S MARKEL HAS CONTRACT PURCHASED BY MARINERS

MOORHEAD, MN – The contract of RHP Parker Markel of the Sioux City Explorers has been purchased by the Seattle Mariners organization, the American Association announced on Monday. Markel is the 19th player from the American Association to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization in 2018. Markel was 1-1 with a 4.14 ERA and four saves in 37 relief appearances for Sioux City in 2018. He pitched 41.1 innings and allowed 20 runs (19 earned) on 38 hits while striking out 62 batters. Markel did not allow a run from August 10 until the end of the season in nine appearances. Markel joined the Explorers in 2018 after spending seven seasons in the Tampa Rays organization. He pitched at both the Double-A and Triple-A level with the Rays in 2015 and 2016. In his career, Markel is 35-27 with a 4.00 ERA and nine saves. He has struck out 441 batters in 508.0 innings pitched.
