Courtesy Lincoln Saltdogs Media Relations Lincoln, Neb — Lincoln Saltdogs RHP Shairon Martis controlled some of the globe’s top bats throughout the recently-concluded World Baseball Classic, helping lead the Netherlands to their second straight World Baseball Classic semi-final. Martis pitched in four of the Dutch team’s seven games, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA over six innings, allowing just three hits. He retired all five hitters he faced in Monday night’s semi-final at Dodger Stadium, including Puerto Rican big league stars Carlos Beltran, Yadier Molina and Javier Baez. The Netherlands were eliminated by a score of 4-3 in 11 innings, as undefeated Puerto Rico advanced to the championship game. Martis was part of a 2016 Saltdogs pitching staff that produced a franchise-record 10 shutouts. Three other Saltdogs played roles in helping the Dutch club advance once more to the penultimate game: INF Curt Smith, who hit .321 in the 2013 WBC, started three games at first base and D.H., going 1-for-12; new-signee C Dashenko Ricardo started four games, hitting .250 with two RBI; while another new ‘Dogs acquisition OF Randolph Oduber launched a home run, with a double and two RBI in six appearances.
