It is starting to become assumed that the six Texas teams which comprised the North American League’s 2012 “United” division will be renamed United League Baseball (ULB), bring back the old league logo from its use prior to the 2011 season. Last year the 6 teams were: Abilene, Edinburg, Fort Worth, McAllen (neutral site), Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen, TX), and San Angelo.
The league dropped roughly the last 2 weeks of games for the Abilene Prairie Dogs and the McAllen Thunder. Likely this is due to poor revenues at the gates, where McAllen played some of its “home” games in the same stadium as the Edinburg Roadrunners. Recent articles have been coming out about the need for a quality stadium in Abilene which has the permission to sell beer. City officials have mentioned that land sites have been discussed but the tax dollars to be put toward a stadium have been allocated to other projects. More on the city’s stance can be found here:
Assuming that Abilene does not return in any form in 2013, even as a neutral site team, another article came out recently mentioning a league official saying that the league will expand into two more cities this season. No word has come out yet on which two cities will be getting ULB teams in 2013.
