Yesterday, Jay Zucker, owner of the Tucson Toros of the Golden Baseball League, announced that the Toros will go on hiatus for at least a year. This is due to the San Diego Padres Triple-A affiliate team coming to Tucson next year (2011) while a new stadium is being proposed for Escondido, California for the 2012 season. The Padres affiliate team was the 2010 Portland Beavers.
Here is the article, which includes a two-minute video:
What is of interest is Zucker’s comment that the Toros are already over $1 million in operating losses and it would take several seasons to break even. One would speculate that travel costs are part of the equation, although any number of factors could be the primary reasons for this announced loss.
Should any changes to the status of the Toros take place then those will be posted on this site.
This leaves the Golden League with:
- Yuma (situation TBA)
- Chico (situation TBA)
- Calgary
- Victoria, B.C.
- Edmonton
- Maui
- Orange County (Fullerton, CA)
This list presumes that Tijuana, St. George, and Tucson will not come back in 2011.
