Longtime independent baseball manager, former NY Yankee Sparky Lyle, has stepped down from his position as field manager for the Somerset Patriots (Atlantic League). His pitching coach, Brett Jodie, will take over the helm for the Patriots as their field manager for 2013.
According to this article, Lyle was the first full-time employee of the Patriots, being employed in January 1997 – nearly a year-and-a-half before the team’s first pitch in the summer of 1998.

Sparky leaves a legacy of independent ball managing that sets a bench mark for others to attempt to emulate. His long term commitment to the Somerset organization brought great value and professionalism to the game. The Patriots are doing right by remaining loyal to him as well, and leaving a post of service and honor to him that is gratifying.
We hope that many fans continue to support Patriot games with their attendance and rooting that has to be among the finest in indy ball. I for one intend to return many times to this great venue.
Thank you, Sparky…and even that doesn’t do justice to our thoughts. Sit back and enjoy the games now from a different perspective.
