Michael Cummings, CEO of the American West Baseball League (AWBL), responded to the press release earlier this week about the Yuma Desert Rats withdrawing from the league.  He talked with the Yuma Sun about the status of the lease at Desert Sun Stadium as well as the likelihood of professional baseball in Yuma this summer:

    And why hasn’t there been any word coming out of Long Beach during this offseason either? Does the team have any leadership?

  2. Startling announcement out of the American West. THEY have reached agreement to put a team in LAS CRUCES!! What the…?

    Why would they go to a locality where the Pecos claim they were not drawing more than 20 a night last year? And this was with a semi established league, although the jury is WAY out on whether it is really a good one or not. Why do the city fathers suddenly turn to a league that hasn’t thrown a pitch yet, have lost a manager that has already established himself as good in several indy leagues already, AND play in a park that is highly suspect?

    Did Dunn just wear out his welcome mat, maybe because he is so stuck on demanding alcohol at every location in a trying to be dry STATE? This should be a very curious development. Maybe this town DID like powder blue uniforms, and pinwheel hats. We’ll see.
