In the past few days there has been a good degree of news within the independent baseball industry. Here is a quick recap of what has taken place:
- The season started for the American Association, Can-Am League, and Frontier League
- Baseball returned to London (Ontario) with the Rippers and in Schaumburg, Illinois with the Boomers. Both teams are new franchises but playing in stadiums which once had independent baseball
- The Rippers also announced a TV deal with Rogers TV for its home games (http://ballparkbiz.wordpress.com/2012/05/18/rogers-tv-to-broadcast-rippers-game/#more-31061)
- The Freedom Pro Baseball League, which is an upstart league that has yet to get mainstream coverage from the pro baseball news, started its season (http://www.examiner.com/article/freedom-pro-baseball-league-is-latest-independent-to-try-phoenix-market)
- The North American League’s Southern Division, which begins play this week, has been renamed the United Division on the NAL website. The owners of the 6 teams in the Southern Division ran the United League through 2010, so this simply may be a change to reflect that element of history
- An interview with the GM of the Na Koa Ikaika Maui and the new Hawaii Stars came out discussing the changes being made to give fans in Hilo, Hawaii (home of the Stars) the best chances to enjoy a game (http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/sections/sports/local-sports/stars-doing-best-get-fans-out.html)
- The Pecos League’s website made a statement about its commitment to remain in Roswell, New Mexico (http://pecosleague.com/pecosleague.asp?page=28&article_id=251)
- The Santa Fe Fuego (Pecos League) featured a 48 year-old pitcher (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sns-mct-near-brawl-coaching-ejections-bad-pitching-20120510,0,6323442.story)
- A fun article by Bob Wirz (http://www.wirzandassociates.com) came out about this being the 20th season of independent baseball, with a focus on the Northern League in 1993. It covers two people: Miles Wolff and Ed Nottle (http://www.canamleague.com/cgi-bin/dist/news_new.cgi?id=1337355108)
