The North American League’s United Division (formerly Southern Division) will begin play this week. The circuit includes the returning Abilene Prairie Dogs, Edinburg Roadrunners, Fort Worth Cats, McAllen Thunder, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, and San Angelo Colts.
Three interesting articles came out in recent days to promote the season, and each gives some insights on the history of independent baseball.
- Article about the Prairie Dogs returning for the first time in over a decade: http://www.reporternews.com/news/2012/may/19/pro-baseball-is-back-in-abilene-with-independent/
- Article about Prairie Dogs manager Bobby Brown: http://www.reporternews.com/news/2012/may/19/manager-brown-devoted-to-independent-leagues/
- Article with Fort Worth Cats manager, and former Major Leaguer, Curtis Wilkerson: http://www.star-telegram.com/2012/05/19/3972464/fort-worth-cats-manager-ready.html
Both Brown and Wilkerson have managed in independent baseball previously. Last year, Brown served under Doc Edwards in San Angelo; and he managed the Las Cruces Vaqueros in 2010. Wilkerson last managed a team in 2008 with the McKinney Blue Thunder. Both of their last managerial stints were in the Continental Baseball League.
