Prior to his being signed by the Yuma Scorpions as the player-manager for the 2011 season, Jose Canseco agreed to a boxing match in the Pittsfield, MA area as well as to be a celebrity first base coach for the Pittsfield Colonials of the Can-Am League. A recent article from the Pittsfield area indicated that Canseco is going to honor his obligation to both activities. If so, it may mark the first time in independent professional baseball history that a person will be (could be) on the active roster and, simultaneously, be a manager and/or coach for two pro teams at the same time.
The boxing component already has controversy, as alluded to in the article, based on the story a few weeks ago that Jose’s twin brother Ozzie showed up to replace Jose in a scheduled boxing match. Ozzie is going to be a player and bench coach for the Yuma Scorpions as well.
The fight also has controversy due to the promoter talking about an injunction. More is in the article.
