The American Association announced today that it is adding two more teams to its 2021 regular season schedule. One is the Kane County Cougars, which were an “affiliated” MiLB team in 2019. The team did not play in 2020 due to COVID. The Cougars will be the AA’s eleventh team.
The 12th team will be the Houston Apollos. The team will play the entire season on the road, and it will be operated by the Pecos League. This is a similar situation to the 2017 Salina Stockade team (also operated by the Pecos League) which played 100 games on the road in the American Association that season. The Apollos have been a men’s league team name and a Pecos Spring League team in previous years. Since the Pecos League controls the various team names, the league decided to go with the Apollos instead of another team name for merchandise and branding purposes. The players will be professional-level, not spring/developmental nor men’s amateur league level.
