WASHNGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things (14-13) defeated the Florence Freedom (18-9) 9-4 to avoid the series sweep Sunday in Florence, Kentucky. The Wild Things got on the board first with an RBI, book-rule double by catcher John Fidanza plating third baseman Kenny Peoples-Walls in the second inning. Washington added on another run as shortstop Mike Hill drove in second baseman Alex Fernandez, after Fernandez reached on a two-base error to lead off the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Freedom right fielder Collins Cuthrell hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to tie the game, and then the Freedom took the lead off another RBI single later in the inning. Washington answered in the top of the next frame as Fernandez hit a three-run home run, putting the the Wild Things up 5-3. Left fielder Bralin Jackson was then able to add some cushion with a solo shot, followed by two more runs scored after designated hitter Kyle Pollock walked with the bases loaded walk and a Peoples-Walls sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 8-3 heading into the seventh-inning stretch.
