THOMPSON LATEST TO INK EXTENSION WITH EVANSVILLE

The Evansville Otters have signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Thompson to a contract extension. (photo courtesy Sally Gries) Thompson, a Coolville, Ohio native, was signed by the Otters before the 2016 season after spending 2015 with the American Association’s Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. In 41 regular season appearances with Evansville last year, Thompson went 4-3 with a 2.18 ERA. His ERA was third-best on the roster among active players and he struck out 40 batters in 45.1 innings. “It’s great to have a reliable guy in the bullpen to get you out of a jam and into the eighth or ninth inning,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “Tyler pounds the zone with late sink that induces a lot of ground balls.” He also made four appearances in the Frontier League playoffs and pitched 3.1 innings to help the Otters win the 2016 league title. “We look for him to solidify our bullpen in a similar role as last year,” McCauley added. With the RedHawks in 2015, Thompson was 3-2 with a 5.95 ERA. Before beginning his professional baseball career, Thompson played collegiately at West Virginia State University. Evansville will open the regular season in Marion, Ill. May 12 against the Southern Illinois Miners…
