Things Heating Up for USPBL Pitcher

By: Tyler Curran Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016 For Birmingham Beavers pitcher Hawtin Buchanan, a lot can be said of his recent success in the United Shore Professional Baseball League. The 6’9”, right-handed pitcher spent his collegiate career at Ole Miss where he came out of the bullpen and saw time as a reliever. Averaging a fastball between 92-94 M.P.H., once touching 96 M.P.H., his numbers in college proved valuable enough to draw attention of MLB scouts. He was selected in the 20th round of the 2014 MLB draft to the Seattle Mariners. He began the 2014 season with the Mariners single-A affiliate the Everett AquaSox. Appearing in 19 games, Buchanan posted a 2.97 ERA and struck out 45 batters in 30 innings pitched. He was eventually promoted to high-A with the Clinton Lumberkings, where again the strikeout to innings pitched ratio thrived, but some deficiencies in his pitching motion caused a lack of fastball command. This was ultimately the reason for his release from the Lumberkings following Spring Training in 2016. (Pictured above on the left is Buchanan’s delivery in the beginning of the 2016 season.
