WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-35) lost 7-4 to the Kansas City Monarchs at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Rivera was hit by a pitch leading off and took third on a single down the right field line from Ian Sagdal. A throwing error on the play allowed Sagdal to take second base. Two batters later, Max Murphy lined a two-run single down the right field line.
Kansas City (50-31) rallied for five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Mallex Smith led off with a home run to right-centre. The Monarchs went on to load the bases and took a 5-2 lead when Casey Gillaspie hit a two-out, grand slam home run to right.
Murphy tripled home Raul Navarro with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Goldeyes within 5-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sagdal singled through the right side with one out and scored two batters later when Murphy’s flyball to right was dropped by Kansas City’s Jan Hernandez.
The Monarchs re-extended the lead to 7-4 in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run to right from Ryan Grotjohn.
Brandon Koch struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Monarchs’ starter Nick Belzer (4-2) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits over seven innings. Belzer walked none and struck out five.
Landen Bourassa (4-5) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on three hits in six innings. Bourassa walked five and struck out seven.
Murphy has hit safely in nine straight games.
The series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. Neither team has announced their starting pitcher.
