WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (45-33) lost 7-5 to the Sioux City Explorers at Shaw Park on Friday night.
The Explorers (36-41) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Gabe Snyder reached on an error leading off and took third two batters later on a single down the right field line from Ademar Rifaela. Zack Kone lined a single to right-centre to score Snyder with the game’s first run. Rifaela later scored on a throwing error that followed a wild pitch.
The Goldeyes cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second. Jacob Rhinesmith doubled to right-centre with one out, and scored two batters later on a two-out, RBI single to left-centre from Deon Stafford Jr.
Raul Navarro was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the third and took third when Max Murphy singled up the middle. David Washington tied the game with a groundball to first that scored Navarro.
Sioux City regained the lead in the top of the fourth when Kone singled home Chase Harris.
Danny Amaral led off the top of the fifth with a double down the right field line. After Blake Tiberi walked, Trey Martin sacrificed the runners to second and third. Amaral then scored on a Snyder groundout to second to make it 4-2.
The Goldeyes pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Lachance drove home Murphy from first with a two-out double into the left field corner.
The Explorers re-extended the lead to 6-3 in the top of the seventh on a solo home run down the right field line from Snyder and an RBI double to centre from Rifaela.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Goldeyes again pulled within one run when Rhinesmith ripped a two-run home run to right.
Sioux City answered back in the top of the ninth when Snyder hit a solo home run to right-centre that made it 7-5.
The Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth before Max Kuhns recorded the final out to earn his second save of the season.
Explorers starting pitcher Kevin McCanna (8-4) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits over five innings. McCanna walked one and struck out two.
Goldeyes’ starter Alex Manasa (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits in five-plus innings. Manasa walked one and struck out a season-high seven.
A season-high 5,779 were in attendance for the game.
The series continues Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Neither team has announced its starting pitcher.
