SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (40-29) lost 14-11 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 11-10 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Canaries (26-41) rallied for four runs to take the lead. Kona Quiggle walked leading off, took third on Osvaldo Martinez’s groundball single to centre, and scored the tying run on a Zane Gurwitz safety squeeze bunt that resulted in a single. Two batters later, Gavin LaValley doubled to centre to drive in Martinez with the lead run. Sioux Falls added insurance runs on an Aaron Takacs RBI fielder’s choice and an Angelo Altavilla two-out, RBI single.
Mitchell Walters pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
The Goldeyes had clawed back from a 10-2 deficit to take an 11-10 lead. Trailing 10-2 in the top of the fifth, Eric Rivera singled to left leading off and advanced to second two batters later when Raul Navarro singled up the middle. Navarro’s single extended his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games. Max Murphy walked to load the bases, and the Goldeyes scratched out a two-out run when Reggie Pruitt Jr. was hit by a pitch. Kevin Lachance followed with a three-run double down the left field line that pulled Winnipeg within 10-6.
In the top of the seventh, a Navarro infield single and a Pruitt single to left put runners on first and second with two outs. Lachance made it a 10-7 game with an RBI single down the right field line. After Deon Stafford Jr. walked to load the bases, Justin Thompson crushed a grand slam home run to left-centre to give Winnipeg an 11-10 lead.
Matthew Dunaway (3-1) picked up the win in relief for Sioux Falls after pitching a scoreless top of the eighth. Bryan Blanton (1-2) took the loss in relief for Winnipeg.
The Canaries took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-out, solo home run to left from Gurwitz.
Murphy led off the top of the second with a line drive home run to left that tied the game.
Sioux Falls went in front 5-1 in the bottom of the third on a two-out, RBI single from LaValley that was followed by a Trey Michalczewski three-run homer.
David Washington ripped a solo home run leading off the top of the fourth to pull the Goldeyes within 5-2.
The Canaries responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth on a John Nester RBI single, a three-run home run from Jabari Henry, and an RBI double from Michalczewski.
Alex Manasa started for the Goldeyes, allowing 10 earned runs on 12 hits in four innings. Manasa walked none and struck out three.
Tyler Garkow started for the Canaries and also took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds. Garkow walked four and struck out six.
Lachance finished with four hits and four RBI. With three home runs, the Goldeyes now have 100 on the season through 69 games. It marks the sixth time in franchise history a Goldeyes’ offence has reached 100-plus home runs.
