GARY, IN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (35-27) used a combination of dominant pitching and stellar defence to shut out the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-0 at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game series between the two clubs.

Box Score

Winnipeg won five of six away from home, having earlier taken two-out-of-three from the East Division leading Chicago Dogs.

The RailCats (24-39) only advanced one runner past second base all afternoon. In the bottom of the third inning, Daniel Lingua doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch but was cut down at the plate by Justin Thompson trying to score on Nate Scantlin’s fielder’s choice.

The Goldeyes broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when they scored twice on bases-loaded walks issued by Gary SouthShore starter Harrison Francis. First Logan Hill drew a full count free pass with one out that forced home Ian Sagdal. Then with two out, Thompson walked on four pitches to bring in Raul Navarro.

Winnipeg added to their lead in the fifth inning when Max Murphy reached on a fielding error and Sagdal came in to score to make it 3-0 Goldeyes.

Rookie Goldeyes starter RJ Martinez (6-4) allowed just four hits over six innings of work to earn the victory. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. The 23-year-old lefty retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.

Zac Ryan, Travis Seabrooke, and Tasker Strobel each threw an inning of scoreless relief as Winnipeg blanked the RailCats for the second consecutive Sunday. Strobel pitched around a two-out double in the ninth inning to convert his 17th save of the season, tying him for the American Association lead with Fargo-Moorhead’s Alex DuBord.

Francis (3-5) was charged with the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.

The Goldeyes return home to Shaw Park on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when Chicago pays a return visit to Winnipeg. Neither club has announced their rotation for the three-game series. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at cjnu.ca.
