GARY, IN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-27) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 at US Steel Yard on Friday night.

Box Score

The RailCats (24-37) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Jesus Marriaga led off with a home run to right-centre field.

The Goldeyes quickly tied the game in the top of the third.  Reggie Pruitt Jr. singled to right-centre leading off and stole second base.  After Justin Thompson walked, Pruitt advanced to third on Hidekel Gonzalez’s flyout to centre.  Eric Rivera lined a single down the left field line to plate Pruitt with the tying run.

Max Murphy and David Washington opened the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles.  Logan Hill lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Murphy with the go-ahead run.  Two batters later, Thompson ripped a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre that made it 4-1 Goldeyes.

Gary SouthShore pulled within 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Woodworth reached second on a leadoff error and scored on an RBI single to left from Jonathan Engelmann.

Winnipeg re-extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth.  Rivera singled to right-centre leading off, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a two-out wild pitch from RailCats’ starter Adam Heidenfelder.

Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Luis Ramirez (7-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings.  Ramirez walked none, struck out seven, and retired 12 of the final 14 batters to face him.

Heidenfelder (2-6) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six and two-thirds innings.  Heidenfelder walked three and struck out three.

Travis Seabrooke and Bryan Blanton combined for a scoreless bottom of the eighth in relief of Ramirez.  Tasker Strobel pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save of the season.

Raul Navarro singled in the top of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
