ROSEMONT, IL – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-26) beat the Chicago Dogs 12-2 at Impact Field on Tuesday night.
The Goldeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Ian Sagdal doubled off the wall in left-centre with one out. Two batters later, Max Murphy ripped a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre. It was Murphy’s 20th home run of the season, and marks the 17th time in franchise history a Goldeye has reached the 20-homer benchmark.
In the top of the second, Reggie Pruitt Jr. beat out an infield single with one out and took third when Kevin Lachance doubled down the right field line. Hidekel Gonzalez ripped a double into the left field corner that scored Pruitt and Lachance. After Justin Thompson and Sagdal drew back-to-back walks, Raul Navarro hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Gonzalez.
The Dogs (38-19) got on the board in the bottom of the second when Danny Mars was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on an RBI double from Anfernee Grier.
Grant Kay hit a solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the third to cut Winnipeg’s lead to 5-2.
Chicago threatened in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third with one out, but Goldeyes’ starter Freisis Adames retired Kay and Ryan Lidge to end the inning with the 5-2 lead intact.
The Goldeyes then broke the game open with a seven-run top of the sixth. Logan Hill singled up the middle leading off and scored two batters later on a triple to right-centre from Lachance. After Gonzalez walked, Tanner Lawson relieved Paul Schwendel. Thompson lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Lachance. Sagdal followed with an RBI double to left-centre that plated Gonzalez from first. Navarro doubled to left-centre to chase home Sagdal with the Goldeyes’ ninth run. After Murphy singled up the middle to drive in Sagdal, David Washington capped the frame with a two-run home run to left-centre. It was Washington’s first career right-handed home run.
Adames (6-3) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits in five innings. Adames walked none and struck out seven.
Dogs’ starter AJ Kullman took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in one and one-third innings. Kullman walked two and struck out one.
Travis Seabrooke, Zac Ryan, Erasmo Pinales, and Tasker Strobel each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Adames to close out the game. Nine different Goldeyes had at least one hit in the game.
Game two of the three-game series is Wednesday morning at 11:35 a.m. Landen Bourassa (2-1, 3.62) faces right-hander Jordan Kipper (5-2, 2.82). All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
