FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-23) lost 4-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field on Tuesday night.
The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Reggie Pruitt Jr. singled through the left side leading off the game, took second on an Ian Sagdal walk, advanced to third on Max Murphy’s lineout to centre, and scored on a David Washington single through the right side.
Fargo-Moorhead (34-13) answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and no outs, Leobaldo Pina drove in the tying run with a fielder’s choice. The RedHawks went on to reload the bases with two outs, and took a 3-1 lead on a two-run single to centre from Evan Alexander.
Both pitching staffs settled in over the next five innings. The Goldeyes pulled within 3-2 in the top of the seventh when Logan Hill led off with an opposite-field home run to right.
The RedHawks answered back in the bottom half when Manuel Boscan’s sacrifice fly plated Sam Dexter who had opened the inning with a double.
Joe Jones retired the Goldeyes in order in the top of the eighth, while Alex DuBord pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his league-leading 14th save. The RedHawks’ defence turned four double plays in the game.
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks’ starter Peyton Wigginton (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. Wigginton walked three and struck out seven.
Goldeyes’ starter Luis Ramirez (5-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Ramirez walked three and struck out three.
The series continues Wednesday night at 7:02 p.m. Alex Manasa (2-2, 3.60) faces right-hander Davis Feldman (3-2, 3.69). All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
