Goldeyes Drop Series Finale to Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers (20-25) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 7-2 at Lewis & Clark Park Monday evening.

Sioux City scored in each of their first four team at-bats, taking a 1-0 first inning lead when Danry Vasquez doubled to right field bringing Danny Amaral in to score.

The Explorers added a pair of runs in their half of the second inning on a two-run home run to left by Shane Podsednik.

Sioux City scored twice more in the third. First Amaral came home on Vasquez’s sacrifice fly to right field, then Sebastian Zawada doubled to left field to score Trey Martin, making it 5-0 for the hosts.

The Explorers made the score 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Vasquez hit a two-run single to right field that drove in Amaral and Zack Kone.

The Goldeyes (24-22) broke Sioux City’s shutout bid with two out in the top of the ninth inning. Justin Thompson recorded his first professional base hit – a single to right field off former big leaguer Blaine Hardy – that brought home Logan Hill and Deon Stafford Jr. and made the score Explorers 7 Winnipeg 2.

Tom Windle (2-2) earned the victory, allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings. RJ Martinez (4-3) took the loss, surrendering seven runs on ten hits in five innings.

The Goldeyes finish the road trip with a three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks that gets underway Tuesday at 7:02 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. American Association Pitcher of the Month Luis Ramirez (5-1, 4.03) will take the mound for Winnipeg while lefty Peyton Wigginton (2-1, 4.26) starts for the RedHawks. The Goldeyes return to Shaw Park Friday, July 8 when Sioux City makes the return visit to Winnipeg.
