Explorers Walk Off on Goldeyes in 11th

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-20) lost 5-3 in 11 innings to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

With the Goldeyes leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th, and with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Chase Harris bounced a single to left field that advanced Tyler Rando to third with no outs.  Danny Amaral followed with a first-pitch three-run home run to left that won the game.

The Goldeyes had just taken the lead in the top of the 11th.  Reggie Pruitt Jr. started the inning on second base, took third on Eric Rivera’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on an Ian Sagdal single up the middle to give Winnipeg its first lead of the night at 3-2.  It was Sagdal’s 600th career base hit.

Thomas McIlraith (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Explorers (18-24).  Tasker Strobel (1-2) took the loss for the Goldeyes.

Sioux City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Harris grounded into a bases-loaded fielder’s choice that scored Blake Tiberi.

Logan Hill blasted a solo home run deep down the left field line leading off the top of the third to tie the game.

In the bottom of the inning, the Explorers went back in front 2-1 when Trey Martin reached on a three-base error and scored on a Nate Samson groundout to shortstop.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Raul Navarro singled home the tying run.

Alex Manasa started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in six-plus innings.  Manasa walked two and struck out three.

Kevin McCanna started for the Explorers and also took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings.  McCanna walked two and struck out four.

Game two of the four-game series is Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m.  Landen Bourassa (1-1, 2.14) faces right-hander Tyler Beardsley (2-2, 5.22).  All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca beginning with Around the Association at 5:00 p.m.

The Goldeyes return home on Friday, July 8th when they host the Explorers at Shaw Park.
