LINCOLN, NE – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-17) won both games of a double header from the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Saturday night, taking the opener 3-0 and winning the nightcap 8-1.
In game one, the Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Raul Navarro walked leading off, stole second, took third on a throwing error by Lincoln catcher Bobby Barnard, and scored on Ian Sagdal’s RBI single through the left side.
Goldeyes’ starter Luis Ramirez made the one-run lead stand, pitching five and one-third scoreless innings on five hits. Ramirez walked one and struck out six.
Lincoln (20-17) threatened in the bottom of the third, putting runners on second and third with one out. Matthew Goodheart hit a groundball to David Washington at first base. Randy Norris broke from third on contact, but was thrown out by Washington at the plate.
With the tying run on first and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Bryan Blanton relieved Ramirez and struck out both batters to face him to keep the lead intact.
Winnipeg scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Tristan Pompey led off with an infield single, took second on Hidekel Gonzalez’s sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a single to centre from Navarro. Pompey scored the Goldeyes’ second run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Sagdal lined a two-out, RBI single to centre that scored Navarro.
Tasker Strobel pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to earn his 10th save of the year.
Ramirez (5-1) picked up the win for the Goldeyes.
Lincoln starter Matthew Cronin (0-1) took the loss, allowing one unearned run on one hit in three innings. Cronin walked two and struck out two.
In game two, Alex Manasa pitched the second complete game of his career and the first by a Goldeyes’ starter since September 9th, 2020. Manasa (2-2) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on six hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out four.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Deon Stafford Jr. was hit by a pitch leading off. After Washington walked, an errant pickoff throw to second base moved Stafford to third. Eric Rivera made it 1-0 with an RBI fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Navarro drove in Pompey with a two-out single to right.
The Saltdogs cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Eddy Martinez. With runners on second and third and one out, Manasa induced a popout from Gary Discarcina Jr. and a groundout from Randy Norris to keep the Goldeyes in front.
The Goldeyes re-extended the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the third. Max Murphy walked leading off and beat out a pickoff play for a steal of second base. After Lincoln starter Kyle Kinman recorded back-to-back strikeouts, Washington ripped a double down the right field line to score Murphy. Rivera made it 4-1 with an RBI double to right that scored Washington. River scored two batters later on an RBI single to left from Brandon Bohning.
With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Washington lifted a sacrifice fly to right that made it 6-1.
Murphy led off the top of the sixth with a home run to left-centre. Rivera drove in Sagdal with an RBI groundout later in the inning to provide the game’s final margin.
Kinman (3-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in three innings. Kinman walked four and struck out four.
