CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (19-17) defeated the Cleburne Railroaders 9-2 at The Depot at Cleburne Station Thursday evening.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Max Murphy doubled down the left field line to drive in Ian Sagdal.
Winnipeg went up 4-0 in the third inning on a three-run home run to left-centre field by David Washington, his tenth of the season and second in two games.
Cleburne (10-26) got on the board in the bottom of the same inning as Zach Nehrir knocked in Chuck Taylor with a single to left field that made the score 4-1 Goldeyes.
Washington brought in Sagdal with a single to right field in the top of the fourth before Murphy belted a three-run home run to left-centre field in the sixth inning to put Winnipeg up 8-1. Like Washington, Murphy has now homered ten times this season and has gone deep on back-to-back evenings.
Cleburne’s Hill Alexander singled to left to score Chase Simpson in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 8-2.
Washington came home on Deon Stafford Jr.’s single to left field in the top of the eighth inning to round out the scoring.
Both Washington and Murphy finished the game with four RBIs.
Lefty RJ Martinez (4-1) went six innings to earn the victory. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one batter. Zac Ryan, Bryan Blanton, and Tasker Strobel each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Goldeyes.
Railroaders’ starter Trevor Simms (1-5) allowed five runs on eight hits over four innings and was charged with the loss.
Winnipeg now visits Lincoln, Nebraska for a three-game series against the Saltdogs at Haymarket Park that gets underway Friday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Luis Ramirez (4-1, 4.95) will start for the Goldeyes, while Lincoln has not announced their rotation. All of the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at cjnu.ca.
The Goldeyes return to Shaw Park Tuesday, June 28 when they will host the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 6:30 p.m.
