WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-15) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 7-5 at Shaw Park on Friday night.
Tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Raul Navarro ripped a line drive to centre field that sailed over the head of Lincoln’s Randy Norris. The ball bounced to the fence, and Navarro sprinted all the way home with an inside-the-park home run to give Winnipeg the lead.
After Bryan Blanton pitched a perfect top of the eighth in his Goldeyes’ debut, Kevin Lachance led off the bottom of the inning with a home run to left-centre that made it 7-5.
Tasker Strobel pitched a perfect top of the ninth on just 10 pitches to earn his eighth save.
Travis Seabrooke (2-2) picked up the win in relief, while David Zoz (3-1) took the loss in relief for Lincoln (17-13).
The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Logan Hill doubled to left-centre with one out. Two batters later, Hill scored an unearned run when Deon Stafford Jr. reached on an infield single that resulted in a throwing error by Saltdogs’ first baseman Alex Steinbach.
Josh Altmann cracked a two-run home run down the left field line in the top of the fourth that put the Saltdogs in front 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, an Ian Sagdal double and walks to David Washington and Lachance set up a two-out, grand slam home run down the left field line by Stafford.
The Saltdogs rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh on a two-run single from Norris and an RBI hit by Ryan Long.
RJ Martinez started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits in six innings. Martinez walked two and struck out four.
Lincoln starter Greg Minier also took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over six innings. Minier walked three and struck out four.
The series continues Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Luis Ramirez (3-1, 4.77) faces left-hander Kyle Kinman (3-1, 4.03).
