Monarchs Best Goldeyes in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-12) lost 6-3 to the Kansas City Monarchs at Legends Field on Wednesday night.

Kansas City (16-7) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, two-run home run from Matt Adams.

David Thompson’s solo homer leading off the bottom of the fourth made it 3-0 Monarchs.

In the top of the fifth, Logan Hill doubled off the left-centre field wall leading off and scored the Goldeyes’ first run two batters later when Andrew Martinez ripped a double down the left field line.

The Goldeyes pulled within 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Eric Rivera doubled down the left field line and scored on a two-out wild pitch.

Kansas City re-extended the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to left from Jan Hernandez, and made it 6-2 in the seventh on another two-out, two-run homer to right-centre from Adams.

The Goldeyes pulled within 6-3 in the eighth on a Raul Navarro RBI fielder’s choice.

Jameson McGrane struck out the side in the top of the ninth to earn his third save.

Kansas City starter Lewis Thorpe (3-0) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits over five and two-thirds innings.  Thorpe walked none and struck out four.

Goldeyes’ starter Josh Lucas (1-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings.  Lucas walked two and struck out eight.

The series concludes Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.  Freisis Adames (2-1, 7.97) takes on right-hander Jon Harris (1-1, 4.79).  All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
