WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (9-10) beat the Cleburne Railroaders 7-4 at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Goldeyes scored five runs to take the lead. Ian Sagdal drew a leadoff walk, and the Goldeyes went in front 3-2 on a two-run home run to left from Max Murphy. After the Railroaders (3-15) retired the next two hitters, Kevin Lachance walked and stole second. Reggie Pruitt Jr. singled home Lachance and took second base on the throw to the plate. Hidekel Gonzalez made it 5-2 with a groundball single to centre that scored Pruitt. After Gonzalez stole second, Raul Navarro flared a single to right that chased home Gonzalez with the Goldeyes’ sixth run.
Cleburne pulled within 6-4 in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run to left-centre from Jacob Bockelie.
The Goldeyes re-extended the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth when Andrew Martinez hit a pinch-hit, solo home run to right-centre.
Tasker Strobel retired all six batters to face him over the eighth and ninth innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
Josh Lucas (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in six and one-third innings. Lucas walked one and struck out four.
Cleburne starter Garrett Alexander (0-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits over five and two-thirds. Alexander walked four and struck out nine.
The Railroaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Nik Sanchez’s two-out, infield single resulted in a throwing error that scored Hunter Wolfe from second base.
Murphy tied the game in the bottom of the second with an opposite-field, solo homer to right.
Hector Sanchez gave Cleburne a 2-1 lead in the third with an RBI single that scored Nick Shumpert.
The Goldeyes remain home and open a three-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday night. Alex Mansa (0-1, 3.94) is scheduled to start for Winnipeg. First pitch at Shaw Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
