STRONG YEAR FOR CAN-AM LEAGUE ALUMNI IN THE MAJORS

Durham, N.C. — Can-Am League alumni were once again solid performers in North American and Asian major leagues this season. Three pitchers and two umpires saw time in MLB, while another three pitchers played in Japan or Korea in 2018. In all, 17 Can-Am alumni (15 players and 2 umpires) have reached Major League Baseball since 2005 (complete list). Major Leagues RHP Wilmer Font (Ottawa ’15-’16), Tampa Bay: Font was outstanding for the Rays after being acquired from Oakland in May, going 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings as both a starter and reliever. The La Guaira, Venezuela, native limited opposing hitters to a .158 average while with Tampa Bay before a late June injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. RHP Luis Garcia (Newark ’12), Philadelphia: Garcia was once again a workhorse out of the Phillies bullpen, finishing fourth on the team with 59 appearances, and was especially effective between July 23 and August 16, not allowing a run in 10 outings. He is now 22nd all-time among Phillies pitchers with 251 career appearances.
