MARINERS PICK UP SUSSEX COUNTY ACE ROLLINS

Photo: Sussex County Miners / Torri Koppenaal Durham, N.C. — Major-league clubs continue to come calling for members of the Can-Am League’s top team. The contract of Sussex County Miners LHP David Rollins was purchased by the Seattle Mariners organization on Tuesday, the league announced. Rollins’ move to the Seattle organization comes on the same day that the contract of fellow Miners LHP Alex Demchak was sold to the Boston Red Sox organization. In his first season with the Miners in 2018, the former major-leaguer was dominant, leading the league with 105 strikeouts and 113.0 innings pitched, tying for first with nine victories, and registering third with a 2.23 ERA. The Deberry, Texas, native did not register a loss between June 7 and August 7 and struck out eight or more hitters in eight of his 16 starts. Rollins’ most impressive outing may have come on June 27, when he limited Rockland to no earned runs on one hit while striking out eight in eight innings of work. On the season, he was especially tough against righthanded hitters, limiting them to a .192 average. Prior to Sussex County, the 28-year-old had played seven professional seasons in the Toronto, Houston, Seattle and Chicago Cubs organizations.…
