SIOUX CITY’S VERNIA EARNS SECOND AWARD

MOORHEAD, MN- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Sioux City Explorers’ RHP Justin Vernia has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 5. Vernia (9-1), who earned Pitcher of the Month for June, gave up just two runs (one earned) in 14 innings of work this past week. The Gonzaga alum gave up just one unearned run over seven innings in a 5-4 win against the Cleburne Railroaders on July 31. Vernia followed up the strong performance with a dominant one, striking out ten in an 8-2 win over the Texas AirHogs on Sunday August 5. The righty joined the Explorers in 2017 after going undrafted out of Gonzaga. In six starts with Sioux City in 2017, Vernia went 3-2 with a 6.11 ERA.
